The Beginning of Wisdom
I am glad to see that you are serious about discovering the meaning of life. Most people, young or old, are not. They say they are but their interest tends to dissipate sooner than it begins. There is a tendency to deceive ourselves into pretending we want to "find out." To discover if there is something beyond this life, something that gives complete refuge. Out of fear, we hide from change, clinging strongly to the things we know. We are always hoping to find security in a world that has no security at all. All things must change, and it is the fact of change, which frightens us the most. Life is change, and it is this constant change of existence, that has to be understood and not feared. The 'self,' being terrified of change, projects its 'self' into the present moment through constant talking, which prevents the seeing of the present, which is not of time. The physical body is imprisoned in the field of time-space and the minds’ close association and attachment to the body, has fallen into ignorance, thinking it must face the same fate as this flesh. The body must die, that is a fact, you can go to the ends of the earth and believe whatsoever, and you will not escape this fact. The truth is; it is the 'self,' which is afraid of coming to an end.
Spiritual Knowing Of oneself
Fear means to escape and the power of fear is strengthen the more you run away from the facts of your life. It is the truth that sets us free of all fear, not our own vanities no matter how well suited they might be. Only by facing the facts of life is there freedom. This is the very heart of being spiritually awaken and religious. A religiosity, unlike those who belong to the various religions of this world, but to be religious as being one in search of truth for oneself. What is important is to awaken to that spirituality which is devoid of believing and disbelieving. To inquire into this, I am asking you to question what belief and disbelief have to do with religion. Plainly, the religious human being is a sensitive human being. It is not to be restrained and trained by beliefs no matter how comforting they may be. You see, a religious human being does not have a religion. After all, what will he or she do with it? Do look into this and you will see the truth of this very clearly.
Why is it we never really question anything? We are never interested in finding the truth for ourselves. We look to everyone else for the answers of life. This world desperately needs those who are truly curious and inquisitive. What is most important is to have a mind that is curious to see things for oneself and not accept what others have to say. Personally, I refuse to accept someone else climbing the mountain of the mind and coming down saying what he saw and realized. In this world, no one, noble or ignoble, can give certainty. Instead, to prevent corruption, I ask each human being to look within oneself for the answers of life. I ask that you climb the mountain and see for yourself whether there is something truly sacred and untouchable. Perhaps, you may climb the mountain, which is our own consciousness, and go beyond what is accepted as truth. Does this have meaning to you? In fact, anyone can see the significance of this. Surely, anyone can see that self-knowledge is the ultimate way of understanding all things.
The darkness of ignorance is the ruler of our lives as long as we are followers. There is no intelligence in living a life of a follower, instead of one who actually understands. Let us look for ourselves and see what happens. That for me has meaning. If self-knowledge is the beginning of wisdom, why do we continue to look to others and not towards ourselves? Only in the emptiness within and the seeing for oneself, is there the awakening of that sacredness, which is immortality.
