The Life Of A Spiritual Teacher
Question: Those who are closest to you, do they necessarily understand what you are saying?
Adonis: Those close to me are aware of some of the physical manifestations. For example, my body vibrates at a high rate when I first lay down to sleep and when I am in deep elation. In addition, when I am speaking of the Sayings, my eyes sometimes change to a distant, glossy white and sometimes they will not blink. Nevertheless, no experiences are the truth.
A close associate whom I have shared a great deal of insight with has no interest in spirituality. For some time now, I have spoken in her presence of the Sayings in dialogue with others, shared some of my insights with her and she could not tell you a word of what I have shared with her or anyone else. After she got married, she confided in me that she is going to just give up, go to church, and just be a Christian or Catholic. She says, she knows religion is an absurdity, but, like most of us as human beings, she is reluctant and too lazy to look within herself for the truth. Therefore, I told her that out of indolence, she is going to accept the false for the truth, which is the very ignorance I have come to obliterate. That is partly why I want to expound the Sayings to the whole world, in which, whoever is interested in spiritual discovery, it is there. Even now, when we speak I can feel her disinterest in what I have to say. Presently, she feels that I have helped her attain the ideal life that she has always wanted. (Career, husband and child.) She says that she is very appreciative of that much, but the understanding of oneself is beyond her reach. She says the traditional married life was always her greatest ambition in life and she has no more need of my spiritual guidance. Nonetheless, I try to explain to her, that the ultimate goal in life is truth and that is my deepest interest in speaking and writing. So, what I am to do? I refuse to take responsibility for someone else’s lack of interest and curiosity. All I can do is point, if you refuse to see that in which I am pointing to, what more can I do.
I have discovered the greatest secret of life and although I am overjoyed and in great ecstasy, I have managed to keep my feet on the ground. Do you really understand how wonderful this is? Within me, it is like being in a blissfulness that is all seeing and all knowing, therefore, there is no need of anyone for support. There is no fear of life or death. There is nothing for me to gain or attain. Within me, the source and the goal are one. Of my own volition, I have discovered this sacred essence, which is all-inclusive, the totality of life that excludes nothing.
What is important is to be so passionate of the journey that nothing and no one can detour you of the pathless. It is up to you to realize that our selfishness is our downfall. We are trapped in our own little world, which is bitter, cynical and distraught. So many of us pretend to want out of this corrupt world but that is only an idea. That is why suffering has some meaning as far as when we are deeply touched by suffering, and then we are interested in being free. As long as our lives have the slightest amount of content, we have no interest in being liberated of this world which is disintegrating and full of discontentment. If you are truly discontented, it is the discontentment that points the way out if you do not try to escape from its flames. Live completely in the flames of discontentment and see what takes place. Only then will you discover the end of sorrow which awakes life.
Listen completely with the wholeness of your being and I will tell you what it is like to have full understanding. It is to live in death in every moment without the slightest concern of what may happen in this life. Truthfully, if I were to take a handful of water from the living ocean of wisdom that is all that you would need to awaken to this Glory. There is this immense reservoir of living water within me but there is no one to share this vastness. Who can take it? Who can live like this? I come to share this freely, but who could understand this?
There is this superficial life on the surface that has no reality of its own that most of us takes as the real. This false life is taken for certainty and so what am I to do? How can I say to you, it is false when in fact you have placed your whole faith and trust on it being factual when in truth it is a falsity?
Who am I to say, ‘look within yourself, the kingdom of God is within you!’ For me it is not a belief or a faith, I actually see the truth of this. Because I see clearly, I do not say just listen to what I say, instead I have come for you to climb the mountain of consciousness and go beyond the limitations of the body and mind to realize the truth for oneself.
Honestly, who is willing to understand this? Therefore, I speak with a gentle voice as I find the right way to express and point this out to others, clearly. I am fully aware of the errors of those before me. All the so-called religions of the world gave up on humanity and said, “Just believe!” Now I come, and then say to you, throw away all viewpoints and values, and simply look, find this for yourself, so that you may actually see if there is the immortal life. So I ask you, what is vital? To believe, disbelieve or see for oneself.
I say with great reverence, the ending of you is the beginning of immortal life. To understand this is to see that you cannot find truth through the self. 'You' must end without effort. This self must see its own limitations and through that understanding, come to an end. The self must wake to the fact that it is a dead thing full of sorrow. All the pain, the hurt and the unhappiness of the self is still there no matter how much we hide and hold on to what we think and feel. When all those emotions are buried within us, we are lost, superficial and insensitive. We must face those masked emotions that are still there, surreptitiously creating chaos in our everyday life.
Question: Why have you continued to speak of awakening, knowing most people are not genuinely interested and some just want to waste your time?
Adonis: If someone comes to me, I must point to the immortal. What am I to do but point? I have no choice; I must point this out to them regardless. You see when many people come to me, no matter how much you think that they are interested in what I have to say on the most part, they are not. So many come and pretend interest, when in fact it is all a pretense. Our hearts are desolate by our egotistic and selfish ways; therefore, our lives are empty and uncreative.
To be a beautiful, original human being, there must be that burning interest and everything awakens and flowers within, without effort. Only when there is that perfume of aliveness are we truly loving, intelligent beings. That is my greatest concern with creating the Sayings. I simply point and the important thing is that seed of the sacred is planted and perhaps, if you are sensitive and receptive to all we are saying, surely this essence, which is all watching, will blossom within you when you least expect it.
It is up to you to understand that the details of the facts, is not the fact. The Sayings only points. It is up to you to look with your whole being so that you may have understanding. In seeing that the explanation is not the fact, you must go beyond words and their definitive meaning. To understand this I would like to go into the essence of what is love. It is to see that the word love is not the fact of love. When we love, we are one with everything and everyone in which there is harmony and order. It is to see the beauty of life unconditionally and effortlessly. When there is love, the real meaning of peace and harmony comes into play, which is beyond the confinement of our limited expectations.
Most of us are not interested in spirituality and I really doubt if there can be an awakening without a burning curiosity to find out. There has to be an intense passion, a deep drive that will not accept anything less than the truth.
Some commence with a little interest but often than not, they drift into romanticism and not love. Romance leads to attachment, fear and sorrow. To place ones whole life around a false thing is absurd. It takes deep insight to realize that romance is fiction. A false idea of love. In romanticism all forms of malevolence is revealed; fear, jealousy, hurt, resentment, distrust and suspicion. When all the supposed conditions and stipulations are not met, hate enters. This means, romance has an opposite which is hatred. So obviously, romance is not love. Love is free of conditions, reasons and ideas. Love is total relationship. It is to live in oneness with all things and everyone. When there is that love which is beyond the concept of the self and its ideas; freedom, beauty and joy awakens within you without any form of exertion.
