Spirituality And Your Own Demise
Question: What is Death?
Master Adonis: What is death? And why are we so shocked when a loved one passes away? Is it the sadness of a life lost or are we concerned for ourselves? The other is gone from us. We must learn to cherish the times we have shared with those who have gone before us.
So, what is the truth about death? Death is inevitable. In one way or another, we will all die. The fact is, that which is born will die. We may believe whatever we desire, this fact we will not escape. The young and old must face death.
We may go to their funeral with all the theatrics associated with physical death. And the dead person is all but forgotten. It is our attempt to push away the fear of our own fate that we long to hide.
Why do we mourn when a loved one passes and not for a stranger? Are we truly mourning their death or is it the harsh fact of realizing that some day we will die? The truth is when someone close to us dies we are suddenly faced with our own demise. Unlike us, death is without prejudice. It comes for each of us.
So we think we love another greatly because we mourn deeply. But, all the hurt one is enduring is the outcome of attachment. And attachment is not love. Love is not sentimental or emotional. Love is not the stirring of our thoughts, feelings and emotions. We mourn the death of another in our mind as imagery. But, the person who is dead is gone and we long for that person for our own selfish gain. We are forever possessing and covering our own fear of loneliness and death.
Spirituality beyond death and sorrow
The sorrow of death does not belong to any one of us. The sorrows of the world belongs to all of us. And when we free ourselves from sorrow, the whole of mankind is affected, profoundly.
Spiritually, we must ask ourselves if there is a way to face death now and not at the end of our life. And if so, then death takes on a whole new meaning in our life. We must enter death while living. In spirituality, it is the ending of the self as living death that is what is vital. This is the true essence of living in the spirit.
As human beings we are so terrified of change. With death being the ultimate form of change, we avoid it as much as we can. So, we never discover the meaning of death. With all the religious leaders who have no understanding, only empty words of comfort in the face of death, we remain in darkness. Surely, they themselves are the blind leading the blind. They do not enter the
So we must feel the sorrow of death without the slightest desire to move away from it. In the full experiencing of the pain, the hurt and the tears, there is freedom. Spiritual development comes when we fully taste the sorrow of ending our attachment with this life. Only then can we be free of sorrow, completely.
When we are faced with the direct fact of death, why do we run to our faiths and beliefs searching for comfort? We live in such great fear because we do not know ourselves. And not knowing oneself prevents clarity. As long as there is no clarity in our life, there is obviously fear and its destructiveness. So when we discover what we are, not as an idea or belief, then we are totally free, spiritually.
So, as we are living, can we face death so that we may understand it before the grave summons our physical flesh? So it is paramount that we discover what death is while we are living. Then in each moment, life becomes a marvelous thing of immense joy. And this spiritual bliss comes when the ego dies.
Spiritually, the illusion of self is seen in its falsity, which is death. This ending opens the door to truth and freedom. It is this truth that is freedom beyond the bondage of death. In seeing this, there is the wholeness of conciousness and the spiritual fulfillment of all life.
Only when we face ourselves can we discern the beauty of death which awakens ecstasy. It is through living death in each moment we discover what beauty and love is. Then we realize this spiritual love that transcends all sorrow and death is God.
