spirituality beyond sex
free excerpt from his book!
The subject of sex has always caused a certain amount of tension and conflict in any discussion, perhaps as much as religion or politics. For most of us, we become very uncomfortable just at the sound of the word, sex. Why is that? Why do we have such an inhibition on something that is rather beautiful and natural? Why have we as human beings, stigmatized it? In the light of the day, we say one thing, but in the dark, we are doing another. Why is there so much contradiction and pretension in our lives? We have attached so much importance upon something wonderful and innate. In its pristine form, sex is considered a reproductive act in order to procreate. On another level, other than procreation, there is of course the sexual appetite to gain sexual pleasure.
Spiritual Life In Meditation Beyond Sex
So much is distorted and feared on the social, psychological and religious forum. Should you have sex, when, with whom and so on? Sex is one of our basic urges, is it not? Nevertheless, what we are going to discuss is the responsibility of having sex and all its implications. To look into this I want you to understand, is there a difference between sex and making love? When we speak of making love, we are referencing the expression of love and affection between you and another. Perhaps, there is no difference and we would like to think there is; one crude, animalistic and the other sophisticated and civilized. Out of ignorance, we have divided life and sex between the profane and the sacred. Of course, in any intimate contact with another there is the concern for disease, pregnancy and the attachment to another emotionally. For most of us, we perceive making love as the expression of affection and passion in which there is no psychological distance between you and another. This means the complete action of being one with another human being, a total relationship beyond the physical. For most of us, this expression of union is just a preconceived notion of thought and I question if we ever reach such a relationship with another when we are so divided within ourselves. To live in that state of oneness requires great insight and immeasurable love beyond the limitations of pleasure and romance.
All the religions of the world tremble when it comes to sex. They have made it into something to fear and avoid. Even ones parents, teachers and friends evade the subject of sex. How ignorant of us. Nonetheless, what is important is to find out what is the truth about sex and your own life. What is your responsibility and how do you see it? These questions must be faced earnestly and honestly. If you are going to have sex, then have it, do not pretend in public one thing while in private you are doing something else. In sex or making love, one must be sensitive and go beyond the pleasure seeking in order to find delight. Actually, if you were a sensitive human being, you probably would not want to have sex, anyway.
Spirituality Transcends This Limited Life
Besides procreation, what is ones intention of having sex? Is it not the pursuit of the pleasure principle? Sex can be such a wonderful thing when we remove all the disgrace that is associated with it in our society. Ultimately, what we desire is the height of the sexual peak, which we call the orgasm. This means we have a goal in mind, an end we are projecting. If we do not get that fulfillment, there is dissatisfaction, which is sorrow. If we do, then we want that feeling to continue and never end. This climactic phase of sexual excitation is thought to be the brushing away of the self, a little taste of death. Actually, it is the transcendence of the thinker as thought and ego. In that orgasmic state, there is a moment free of all attachments, in which you as the ego are no more. It is to live in death, at least, momentarily. It is in this moment all things are completely dissolved and the essence of joy consumes you. Within this orgasmic ending, there is the gateway that points to the ecstasy beyond time-space and causation. The doorway that opens is the ending of you. In this ecstasy, there is the end of all your problems of existence, temporarily. This communion between you and another comes into being when there is no division within you. It is here when one can discover the oneness of all things. To enter the absolute bliss is the ending of all that you know and believe. A complete letting go of everything. It is more than a feeling. It is going beyond pleasure to repose in the radiance of all life. If you are free and completely open in this moment, the brilliance of life is awakening in you.
